The Independent Anti-Corruption Authority has received 911 complaints and has investigated 645 of them, the Authority’s President, Haris Poyatzis, said on Tuesday while speaking at a discussion at the Cyprus Forum in Nicosia on the rule of law and the independence of institutions.
Mr. Poyatzis said that as of August 31, 2026, a total of 911 complaints had been submitted to the Anti-Corruption Authority, and that the investigation of 645 complaints (71%) has been completed. The complaints come from both institutions and citizens, he noted, adding that the Authority has found a lack of awareness regarding corruption.
Regarding the granting of investigative powers to the Anti-Corruption Authority, its President stated that the Authority recently received the relevant recommendations from the Ministry of Justice, adding that discussions will begin in October 2026.
Regarding the issue of granting prosecutorial powers to the Authority, Haris Poyatzis noted that “there is reluctance on the part of the authorities to proceed to this stage,” adding that a constitutional amendment is required for this purpose.
He also noted that the Authority has developed and has begun to gradually implement an action plan consisting of 11 measures. Regarding safeguarding the integrity of individuals in top executive positions, he said that the Authority aims, in about a year from now, to provide anyone assuming public office with a booklet containing all laws pertaining to corruption and to inform them of the risks associated with non-compliance these laws.
