A “war” of statements between the Ministry of Justice and Equality, the Pan-Cyprian Union, and the current President of the Prison Guards’ Branch, Giorgos Maltezos, issuing a new statement in response to the Ministry of Justice and Public Order.
Shortly before that, the Ministry of Justice stated that it was responding “for the last time” to the Union’s repeated letters. In a pointed tone, the Ministry referred to the letters as “nuisance,” while noting that the Union’s letters will be considered only when they are substantiated and respectful.
Here is the Ministry of Equality’s statement in full:
“This is the ‘last time’—you must answer for yourselves regarding reality and your
responsibilities.” The Ministry of Justice is allegedly accusing us of “media hype,” attempting to silence the voice of truth with labels and threats of a “last time.” But reality cannot be hidden behind “we will, we will, we will” press releases.
The noise isn’t coming from us; not only do you yourselves cause it through your inaction, but it is also the only way for the public to learn of your authoritarianism and the true situation within these walls.
You are judged daily by the results: All talk, no action. Staff and inmates continue to be at risk in an explosive, overcrowded environment.
Debunking your claims
“We are constantly monitoring the situation”: We know this very well. You admit it yourselves: you are mere spectators of a tragedy unfolding before your eyes, confined to the role of observers while security crumbles.
“The situation calls for seriousness, not noise”: Seriousness means protecting human life, not managing the crisis through public relations. The real problem is not the highlighting of issues, but the persistent inability to resolve them.
The “last time” threat: This rhetoric reveals a deeply authoritarian mindset and a desire to silence dissent. We remind Mr. Fytiris and Ms. Siali that a ministry’s institutional obligation is not limited to issuing warnings to those who point out what is wrong, but requires tangible results.
Our clear position
Stop the public relations games, drop the threats, and finally get down to business. Deliver immediate results to ensure the safety of correctional officers and inmates.
Since you choose to remain spectators and resort to authoritarian methods, we will continue to denounce the situation internationally until safety and the rule of law are restored at the Central Prisons. You can stick to your surveillance and threats. History and the facts will judge who is truly working and who is merely managing public perception.
