The Police Traffic Division is taking enhanced measures ahead of the August 15 holiday to facilitate the flow of vacationers, said George Milis, the Department’s Road Safety Officer, on Friday while speaking to reporters at the Latsia Weighing Station.
Mr. Milis noted that on the Feast of the Assumption, based on experience from previous years, there is increased traffic on all highways, intercity roads, and major thoroughfares leading both to coastal areas and to mountain resorts.
Consequently, he continued, the police will implement enhanced policing measures, primarily to regulate traffic but also to assist drivers traveling in all directions—both to coastal areas and to mountain resorts. “The enhanced measures by the Traffic Police will include policing, patrol coverage across the entire road network, traffic control, and traffic management measures where necessary,” he added.
At the same time, he emphasized that the police will be on high alert to detect flagrant traffic violations, such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, speeding, driving without passengers wearing seat belts, motorcyclists riding without protective helmets, the offense of dangerous passing on the road network, the use of a cell phone by the driver while driving, and other violations, which “have been proven in recent years to contribute to serious and fatal traffic collisions”.
In addition, the Head of Road Safety at the Police Traffic Directorate reported that on Friday afternoon, between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., a massive exodus of vacationers is expected from Nicosia to coastal areas and mountain resorts, noting that the same trend is observed from Limassol toward coastal areas and mountain resorts.
Day-trippers are expected to return on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. until nearly 9:00 p.m., Mr. Milis said, adding that increased traffic is expected. “Therefore, where necessary, traffic police officers will implement traffic control measures, implementing traffic control measures to better assist the public and drivers in moving more smoothly without traffic problems, but above all to prevent traffic accidents,” he concluded.
