Relatives and friends of a family of Bulgarian nationals are making a dramatic appeal calling for the repatriation of the bodies of the two brothers, aged 8 and 10, who died on Sunday at noon inside their father’s fatal vehicle, which was parked in the courtyard of the apartment complex where they live in Xylofagou.

A fundraiser is being organized on social media so that the bodies of the two children can be transported to Sofia and buried with the proper honors.

Meanwhile, the Xylofago Community Council has decided to provide financial support for the repatriation of the two children’s remains. A related announcement will be issued tomorrow, following a meeting of the Community Council.

Authorities at the British Bases in Dhekelia are continuing their investigations and examinations to determine the causes of the double tragedy. The 30-year-old father and his 38-year-old partner are expected to be summoned for questioning again, while they remain in custody pursuant to a court order issued by the British Bases.

Authorities are already scrutinizing the children’s relatives and neighbors regarding the children’s final hours, as well as new testimony that a neighbor had spoken with the two boys a few hours before their deaths and had offered them candy.

The father’s brother and cousin, who live in the same apartment complex, have already answered questions from investigators at the British Bases regarding the children’s living conditions, who had arrived in Cyprus twenty days ago for a summer vacation.

The autopsies performed on the children’s bodies by a Greek pathologist did not reveal the exact causes of death, though samples were taken and sent for histopathological testing. The heartbroken mother of the two children, who is currently in Bulgaria, has also been summoned to testify.

Specialists from abroad have been called in to investigate whether the fatal vehicle had any mechanical failure, causing the locking system to activate and trapping the children inside.

Cyprus Police Spokesperson Byron Vyronos stated that, so far, the British Bases have not requested the assistance of Cypriot authorities in investigating the case.
