Investigation into suspicious health centers: Numerous complaints filed with the greek medical association (PIS) regarding facilities practicing “quack medicine”

Using technology to identify misinformation and anti-science advertisements

The Cyprus Medical Association is continuing its investigations at a rapid pace into the operation of suspicious health centers that offer alternative therapies, following the death of Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis at an unlicensed clinic in Kolonaki during a bloodletting procedure. PIS President Michalis Anastasiadis stated on the Alpha News program that the Association is constantly receiving information and complaints, both regarding the suspicious center in the Larnaca district and other locations, which are being evaluated and investigated.

“With regard to the provision of services that, for us in the medical community, are essentially unacceptable as medical practice, yes, there are many more such cases. As for the issue of plasma donation, we have no other reports before us.”

The President of the PIS noted that the Association’s investigators have mobilized all available technological means to identify advertisements on social media and more broadly on the internet, to combat “misinformation and anti-scientific advertising.”

“Unfortunately, these anti-scientific groups are actively misleading the public by exploiting people’s anxiety regarding treatment or relief from serious health problems. What we must reiterate to our fellow citizens is just how dangerous these pseudo-treatments are, because since they lack scientific basis and do not align with what is taught at universities, in medical schools around the world—and medicine is constantly evolving—let’s distinguish between new knowledge and innovation on the one hand, and quackery on the other.”
