The police are awaiting the official appointment of the independent criminal investigators, with their names to be published in the Government Gazette, in order to assist its own investigators in the probe into the “State Mafia” case, following the relevant findings of the Independent Anti-Corruption Authority, Police Spokesperson Byron Vyronos told CNA.
“What we expect is that once they officially assume their duties, following publication in the Official Gazette of the Republic, they will, in theory, request assistance from police investigators,”said Mr. Vyronos when asked about the matter.
He noted that statements are taken by individuals familiar with domestic procedures to ensure they are admissible in court. “In such cases, the assistance of the police is always requested,” he said. “If asked, we will provide it to the best of our ability,” he said.
When asked whether the case file would be handed over to the independent criminal investigators by the police, Mr. Vyronos estimated that the file would be handed over by the Council of Ministers.
Furthermore, in response to a question about the progress of the investigation by independent investigator Andreas Paschalidis regarding the video posted on the social media platform “X” on the account under the name “Emily Thompson” on January 8, 2026 (the “videogate” case), Mr. Vyronos referred the matter to Mr. Paschalidis himself, noting that the police officers assisting with the case are doing so under his direction.
Mr. Paschalidis declined to comment to KYPE on the progress of his investigation into the scandal thus far. He merely noted that “I will try to meet the deadline.” It should be recalled that the investigation was originally scheduled to be completed around mid-April 2026. On April 6, Mr. Paschalidis requested a two-month extension to continue the interrogations, as the entire lengthy video had been obtained in the meantime.
On June 15, the independent criminal investigator requested another extension because, according to his statement, he needed time to complete the collection and evaluation of new, substantial evidence. The new deadline was set for July 20, 2026.
