A new wave of bad weather is “hitting” Cyprus, with a yellow warning issued by the Meteorological Service for severe thunderstorms, remaining in effect until 6:00 p.m. The warning is expected to be renewed for the coming days, as the severe weather conditions are not expected to subside anytime soon.
According to the warning, isolated severe thunderstorms are expected to affect areas in the north, the mountains, and the interior. Hail is expected during the thunderstorms, while winds will be variable and will pick up.
As the Press Spokesperson for the Meteorological Service, Andreas Chrysanthou, stated on the “Alpha Enimerosi” program, rainy conditions will prevail on the island starting today and continuing over the next few days.
“Areas in the north of the island, the northern parts of the Troodos Mountains, northern sections of the island, and inland areas will be affected. We’ll see that around noon and afterward, there will be intense thunderstorms bringing rain and storms, which may be accompanied by hail. This does not mean that other areas will not experience some rain, particularly in the eastern half of the island. However, the weather phenomena affecting the remaining areas may not meet the criteria for a yellow warning.”
Intense and prolonged weather conditions are expected on Friday, while unstable conditions will persist on Saturday and Sunday as well. Through next Monday, we will see daily rain and thunderstorms on the island.
Tomorrow, October 1, during the major military parade, we may see some rain in inland areas or neighboring regions, with cloudy skies and certainly no significant sunshine.
“The most intense and widespread precipitation will occur around noon, in the early afternoon, and thereafter.”
Detailed weather forecast
A low-pressure system is beginning to affect the region.
Initially today, the weather will be partly cloudy, while isolated showers are expected in coastal areas, and an isolated thunderstorm cannot be ruled out in the southwestern part of the island. Gradually, the weather will become mostly cloudy, and especially after noon, local showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected, particularly in the mountains, the interior, and the north, though such phenomena cannot be ruled out in eastern areas as well. Hail is likely to occur during thunderstorms. Winds will be mainly southwesterly to northwesterly, light to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort, and will gradually become moderate to strong along the coast, 4 to 5 Beaufort. The sea will be generally slightly rough. Temperatures will reach around 30 degrees inland, around 28 along the coast, and around 18 degrees in the higher mountain areas.
Tonight, the weather will remain mostly cloudy, while isolated showers are expected along the coast, and isolated thunderstorms cannot be ruled out, mainly in the west and north. Winds will be mainly southwesterly to northwesterly, light and occasionally moderate along the coast, 3 to 4 on the Beaufort scale. The sea will initially be slightly rough, but will gradually become temporarily calm to slightly rough. Temperatures will drop to around 19 degrees inland and along the coast, and to around 8 degrees in the higher mountain areas.
On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, the weather will be mostly cloudy, while in the morning hours along the coast there will be isolated showers or even thunderstorms. Gradually, and especially after noon, these conditions will become more widespread and intense, with local showers and isolated thunderstorms expected. Hail is expected during thunderstorms. On Friday, the weather conditions may be intense or even prolonged.
Temperatures will gradually drop through Friday and show little change on Saturday, remaining below normal levels for this time of year.
