Maria Christofidou, the Commissioner for the Protection of Personal Data, discovered surveillance cameras in a restaurant. She revealed this during an appearance on Politi Radio.
Speaking on the “Alpha Kalimera” program, the Commissioner noted that during a visit to a restaurant, she observed that there were cameras in the women’s restrooms.
Ms. Christofidou noted that her Office is launching a campaign targeting all restaurants and cafes, with on-site inspections beginning in September. She explains that if anyone wishes to install cameras beyond what is permitted by law, they must conduct an impact assessment.
She clarifies that installing cameras in restrooms is prohibited, as this constitutes an invasion of citizens’ privacy.
She emphasizes that the law specifies the locations where cameras may be installed, the range of their footage, and their operating hours.
