The Extraordinary General Assembly of fixed-term and indefinite-term teachers in programs run by the Ministry of Education, which convened on Friday morning, decided to suspend the 24-hour strike scheduled for next Monday for 15 days, in order to give the Minister of Education time and, by by extension, the government to implement what had been discussed at the meeting between teachers and the Minister on Wednesday, Andreas Kounnis, General Secretary of PASEV-PEO, told CNA.
“We are now entering discussions on the two outstanding issues,” he noted, explaining that the first issue is providing workers with not an unemployment benefit for the three summer months but a special income replacement allowance for those months, with retroactivestarting this summer. “This is a new development that we view positively,” he said, adding that “the government will evaluate the proposal we will submit in the coming hours.”
The second issue, he continued, is that the Minister of Education will provide a written commitment to issue calls for applications for all support programs, as provided for in the bill, so that even those few employees who have not yet been converted to permanent status are covered.
Mr. Kounnis concluded that more than 150 employees participated in the meeting, which lasted 2 hours and 15 minutes.
