Investigations by members of the Paphos Police Department are continuing at a rapid pace, in connection with the antiquities trafficking case they are investigating following the arrest of a 41-year-old man at an archaeological site in the Kouklia area.
It was around 6:30 p.m. yesterday when the suspect was caught “red-handed,” digging with a pickaxe and a metal detector at a site where students from the University of Athens are conducting excavations, along with their professor and under the supervision of the Department of Antiquities.
The students immediately notified the police, whose officers rushed to the scene and arrested the 41-year-old man. Subsequently, searches were conducted at properties owned by the suspect, but nothing was found.
The 41-year-old was brought before a judge and charged with the offenses of antiquities trafficking and unauthorized possession of a metal detector.
