The Nicosia Municipality’s announcements regarding the redevelopment of Ledra and Onasagorou Streets have stirred up strong reactions among shop owners, with the backlash in recent days being particularly intense.
Speaking on the Alpha News program, the Mayor of Nicosia stated that the redevelopment is necessary and, according to experts, cannot be postponed any longer.
“The infrastructure is in very poor condition. Without exception—the sidewalks, the storm drains, the electrical system, and other utilities—all need improvement.
” Charalambos Prountzos – Mayor of Nicosia
According to the plan, the redevelopment will take place in stages, divided into five different phases, each lasting four months. This phased approach is considered important to ensure better oversight of the contractor’s adherence to the timelines, and strict penalties will also be in place.
“I understand people’s concerns. I know what a daily wage means, I know what running a business means, I know what the restaurant industry means, but we can’t replace the contractor. We have contractors who are very professional.”

The mayor also emphasized that the dialogue remains open with all stakeholders so they can express their views and the project can be put out to bid as soon as possible.
In the coming period, more students from Kapodistrian University are expected to move to the area, and within three years, approximately 1,000 students are projected to move there following the establishment of theat Faneromeni.
The project will be funded by a grant of 10.8 million from the revitalization fund, which must be spent by 2029.
