A new alarm was sounded for the fire department regarding a fire near the community of Chrysochous.
According to a post by Fire Department spokesperson Andreas Kettis, the fire is raging in a reed bed, with five fully staffed fire trucks from the Chrysochous City Fire Station and the Stroumbi and Pegeia Rural Fire Stations.
Forest Department personnel are also assisting in the operation, and aircraft have been deployed to the scene.
“Preliminary water drops were made by two firefighting aircraft, and two firefighting helicopters are continuing to drop water to contain the fire,” said Mr. Kettis.
The fire is under control, and the burned area covers approximately eight decares, mainly along a riverbed.
During the operation, nearby homes and an orchard were protected.
As Mr. Kettis concludes, the point where the fire started has been identified, and an investigation into the causes will be conducted in cooperation with the police.
