On September 2, 2026, officials from the Customs Department at Larnaca Airport, after evaluating intelligence, identified a 57-year-old Turkish Cypriot passenger prior to his departure for the United Kingdom; his luggage contained large quantities of cigarettes, the packaging of which did not bear the “harmful effects of smoking” warning in Greek and Turkish, nor did it include the security feature or the unique traceability code, indicating that they were duty-free.
Specifically, a total of 70 cartons, each containing 200 cigarettes, were found in the passenger’s luggage. The passenger was arrested on the spot for offenses committed in flagrante delicto, while his luggage and its contents were confiscated. He was later released after his request for an out-of-court settlement of the case, involving a payment of €4,200, was accepted. The confiscated cigarettes will undergo the prescribed destruction process.
