A total of 396 cartons of untaxed cigarettes and heated cigarettes were found and seized by police officers in Nicosia, specifically by members of the Nicosia Customs Police.
The tobacco products were found in the possession of a 40-year-old man, who was arrested by police officers and subsequently was served with an out-of-court notice to pay a sum of 20,000 euros.
Based on information from the Nicosia Customs Office regarding the illegal possession, distribution, and trafficking of duty-free tobacco products, as well as fraudulent evasion of VAT, police officers conducted a search operation on September 16 and 17. As part of the police operation, they located and stopped the 40-year-old man while he was driving a car in the Engomi area. A search of the 40-year-old’s car followed, during which the following items were found and seized:
- 301 cartons of heated cigarettes
- 95 cartons of cigarettes
- 2,400 euros in cash
- Two cell phones
After it was determined that these were untaxed tobacco products, police officers proceeded to arrest the 40-year-old. He was taken to the Customs Department offices in Nicosia, where the seized items were turned over, along with the 40-year-old’s vehicle, which was also impounded.
Customs Department officials issued the 40-year-old a notice of payment in the amount of 20,000 euros for possession of the undeclared goods that were found.
