Two Irish passengers were about to depart with undeclared cigarettes in their luggage.

Specifically, according to an announcement by the Customs Department on Sunday, October 4, after evaluating intelligence, officials identified two Irish nationals, aged 37 and 52, bound for Manchester and London in the United Kingdom, respectively, whose luggage contained large quantities of duty-free tobacco products.

Specifically, a total of 244 cartons—each containing 200 cigarettes—were found in the four checked bags of one passenger, while in two small pieces of luggage belonging to the other passenger, tobacco for rolling cigarettes weighing a total of 9 kilograms and 500 grams was found, whose packaging did not bear the warning about the dangers of smoking in Greek and Turkish, nor did it include the security feature or the unique traceability code, indicating that they were duty-free.

The two passengers were arrested on the spot for offenses committed in flagrante delicto, while their luggage and its contents were confiscated. The first passenger was taken into custody and is scheduled to appear today before the Larnaca District Court. The second passenger was released, after his request for an out-of-court settlement of the case through the payment of €3,500 was accepted. The confiscated cigarettes will undergo the prescribed destruction procedure.
