On September 23, 2026, officials from the Customs Department, as part of their routine inspections to enforce the Green Line Regulation at the Agios Dometios Crossing Point, stopped a vehicle with Turkish Cypriot license plates for inspection; the vehicle was driven by a Turkish Cypriot and carried four passengers of British nationality.
During the inspection of the passenger’s luggage, 47 cartons—each containing 200 cigarettes—and packages of rolling tobacco with a total weight of 1 kilogram and 500 grams, which did not bear the “smoking is harmful” warning in Greek and Turkish, nor did they have the security feature or the unique traceability code, indications that they were untaxed.
The tobacco products were seized and will undergo the prescribed destruction process. Those involved were initially arrested for the offenses they were caught in the act of committing, but were later released after their proposal for an out-of-court settlement of the cases was accepted, with the payment of a total of €3,500.
