On Wednesday, the Attorney General dismissed the allegations that the Anti-Corruption Authority had obstructed an investigation against Deputy Attorney General Savvas Angelidis, regarding the “black van” case, on Wednesday, the Attorney General, George Savvides, in remarks made following the session of the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs.
When asked about the disagreement with the Anti-Corruption Authority regarding the black van case and the intention to investigate a conflict of interest involving the Assistant Attorney General, which had not been conducted, Mr. Savvidis said that only a superficial reading of the case could lead one to conclude that any correspondence to date with the Authority had blocked the way for any investigation concerningthe Assistant Attorney General.
“I believe that all one needs to read to form an opinion are the four statements. I have stated that the Anti-Corruption Authority had sent me a letter regarding the four specific issues it intends to investigate, which were detailed in writing as terms of reference for the investigators. I replied to them regarding the four points, explaining what investigation had been conducted for each one, and I told them that the decision to launch the investigation is not mine, nor can I block any investigation myself, as was again incorrectly stated by some journalists,” he went on to say.
“But what’s most serious is the fact that it’s unthinkable to discuss whether a complaint filed with the Anti-Corruption Authority in 2023 could possibly be included in my response to the Authority, regarding which I stated that the police investigation covered the period from 2019 to 2021. Not only was there no mention of the Assistant Attorney General in the letter I received from the Authority—to which I replied— but clearly, the police could not have investigated a 2023 complaint in an investigation that ended in 2021,” he added.
“The Authority has every right to decide and investigate whatever it wants; the Attorney General has no right to prevent the initiation of any investigation. We have an understanding of how communication between us should take place to avoid unnecessary investigations into matters that have already been investigated; the exchange of letters was based on this understanding. The decision to launch any investigation rests with the Authority, and of course, just as I cannot prevent any other investigation, and since there have been many investigations against the Assistant—all of which, to my knowledge, concluded that there was nothing against him—this one could also be investigated,” he concluded.
