The European Union has turned a new page on migration by adopting one of the strictest return frameworks in recent years. This week, the European Parliament approved a new set of rules aimed at simplifying and accelerate procedures, and prevent abuse and unauthorized movements within the European Union.

MEP Geadis Geadis of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group, in statements to ALPHA, emphasized that the new system significantly tightens the immigration framework for all EU member states.

“They are creating a strict immigration framework for European Union member states, which includes, among other things, reception centers in safe third countries that also serve as return centers.
” Some countries, such
as Italy, have already begun to conclude such agreements. However, this provision does not apply to unaccompanied minors and may only be implemented through agreements with countries that respect human rights, international law, and the principle of non-refoulement.

Mandatory Departure

The new immigration policy stipulates, among other things, that those residing irregularly in a and are issued a return decision must leave the country within the specified time limit and are also required to cooperate with the competent authorities; otherwise stricter measures will be imposed on them.

At the same time, there will be a common European registry where member states will be informed of any convictions and offenses.

“For example, if someone involved in terrorist organizations is deported—say, for being involved in a criminal act in Germany—they will not be able to come to Cyprus afterward to apply for asylum. There will now be a lifetime ban from all European member states. And if their home country refuses to take them back, there will also be strict sanctions.
”
The new rules will now be mandatory for all EU member states, with certain provisions—such as those concerning return centers, age assessment of minors, and the external dimension of returns to be implemented immediately, while the remaining provisions will take effect 12 months after the legislation enters into force.
