The issue of detention center security will be on the agenda for Monday at noon during the regular meeting between the Minister of Justice and Public Order, Kostas Fytiris, and the Chief of Police, following the escape of a 19-year-old detainee from the Lakatamia detention center on Friday night.
As the Minister told CNA, the goal is to find solutions to the chronic problem of overcrowding in detention facilities. He noted that the issue falls under the jurisdiction of police leadership, which held an emergency meeting on Saturday to discuss the matter, and added that measures deemed appropriate will be considered.
The fugitive’s 45-year-old uncle is in custody
On Sunday, the Nicosia District Court ordered the 45-year-old man, who was arrested in connection with the escape of a defendant from the Lakatamia detention center, to be held in custody for five days
The 45-year-old was arrested yesterday, Saturday, pursuant to a court warrant, on charges of aiding and abetting after the commission of a criminal offense.
He is the uncle of the 19-year-old fugitive, who appears to have contacted him immediately after the escape; authorities are investigating whether he helped him flee the area.
Meanwhile, the 19-year-old who escaped from the Lakatamia Police Detention Center has remained at large for a second 24-hour period.
After punching the window bars in his cell, the 19-year-old managed to break through them and then escape from the Lakatamia police detention center, and it is believed that he crossed into and is hiding in the Buffer Zone.
The young man’s absence from Syria was noticed around 7:45 p.m. on Friday during the headcount.

On Saturday morning, an emergency meeting was held at Police Headquarters, where the events and actions taken from the moment the escape was discovered were discussed, with the criminal aspect of the case being investigated by a team from the Nicosia Criminal Investigation Department.
The 19-year-old was transferred to the Lakatamia detention center following a decision by the Limassol District Court to remand him in custody pending trial.
