In recent years, the EAC, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Department of Forests, the Game and Wildlife Service, and the Civil Aviation Authority have been waging a tough battle to prevent fires caused by power lines in rural and forested areas.
Speaking on the Alpha Summer program, EAC Press Officer Christina Papadopoulou explained that the relevant agencies have drawn up a plan for patrols, inspections, and maintenance of the power grid to reduce potential risks. In fact, throughout the year, tree pruning and removal are carried out wherever problems are identified. Ms. Papadopoulou noted that all grid expansions in forested areas are carried out using buried conduits, while in hazardous areas, exposed cables are removed and replaced in accessible locations without dense vegetation.
The EAC spokesperson said that wherever infrastructure exists, cables are buried underground, citing as an example the installation of a 14-kilometer-long cable in the Stavros area of Psoka, where an asphalt road was built.
