Disciplinary action cannot be ruled out in connection with the fire that broke out at the Kalo Chorio firing range.
The military investigation is documenting the events in great detail, including what led up to the fire and how it was caused. The final decision regarding responsibility and whether disciplinary measures will be imposed on senior officers will be made by the Commander of the National Guard, who is reviewing the findings.
However, a crucial meeting will take place in mid-September, during which residents of the affected communities will hear the decisions made by the Ministry of Defense, with their main demand being the permanent closure of the firing range.
Today, officials visited the area to assess the damage caused to homes and properties. The process will continue tomorrow, focusing on the damage sustained by crops.
At the same time, the armed forces are also reviewing preventive measures to ensure that a similar incident does not recur.
The fire broke out on July 27 following an exercise involving U.S. soldiers at the firing range. During the exercise, RPGs were neutralized through controlled detonations in the presence of senior National Guard officials. Villages were evacuated due to the fire, which caused extensive damage, with approximately 120 hectares of land destroyed.
