“The Most Successful NGO”: Unresolved Issues at the Health Committee Are on the Table with OSAC

The President announced that there would be concerted pressure in Parliament regarding the health bills

Perhaps the most successful nongovernmental organization in terms of promoting patients’ legitimate demands, as President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides described OSAC before the start of a meeting with a delegation from the organization at the Presidential Palace today, while emphasizing that the government is constantly investing in health and education.

“From the very beginning, we have viewed you as partners, as fellow travelers, and even before I was elected, a large part of the campaign platform consisted of your suggestions, which we began to implement, and I am pleased that we have begun to put them into practice,” he told the OSAC delegation.

President Christodoulides also noted that they are continuously investing in health, as well as in education. “We do not approach these sectors through accounting or financial measures; they are investments in our country, in its people, and in the country’s future, and I am pleased that we have the opportunity to invest in these sectors, because for us, true development must translate into improvements in citizens’ daily lives, and these improvements hinge first and foremost on issues of health, education, and the welfare state,” he said.

He added that they had enjoyed excellent cooperation with the previous Commission and expressed confidence that this would continue and be strengthened even further. “Our goals and aspirations are shared,” he added. “We want to work together to push—with or without quotation marks— the House of Representatives, because there are far too many bills pending before the relevant committee—bills that were your own initiatives, and which we have advanced; to evaluate certain institutions that you recommended we adopt—and we did so,” he noted. As an example, he cited the Patient Ombudsman, which he said had been a long-standing demand of patients, and the government implemented it.

“So, I look forward to addressing substantive issues today and determining how we move forward,” the President concluded.
