With feelings of deep sorrow, but also of collective reflection, the 15th anniversary of the deadly explosion at the “Evangelos Florakis” in Mari, which shook Cyprus on July 11, 2011.
During the wreath-laying ceremony, the President of the Republic paid the tribute due to the 13 heroes who lost their lives in the line of duty, while also sending a strong message regarding the state’s assumption of responsibility.
In his speech, the President addressed the relatives of the fallen, expressing, on behalf of the state, a public apology for the system’s long-standing failures.
“As President of the Republic of Cyprus, on behalf of the state, I must express my sincere apologies and ask for forgiveness for the mistakes and failures that led to the deadly explosion,” he stated emphatically, acknowledging that the country had failed to provide them with the necessary security.
The President emphasized that Mari is now a sacred landmark that serves as a reminder of the State’s primary obligation: the protection of human life and the country’s critical infrastructure.
