Therapeutic plasmapheresis is an established extracorporeal treatment method that has been used internationally for many years and can, in cases of serious illnesses, play a decisive role in improving patients’ condition, according to the Cyprus Nephrology Society, in response to media reports and public discussions surrounding this specific treatment.

It also emphasizes that therapeutic plasmapheresis should be performed exclusively in appropriately licensed healthcare facilities or specialized nephrology units, by trained and experienced medical and nursing staff, using certified equipment, and under continuous monitoring of the patient before, during, and after treatment.

In a statement, the Society notes that plasmapheresis is used for specific and scientifically documented medical indications, including certain autoimmune, neurological, hematological, and nephrological diseases, while noting that the decision to administer it is made by the treating physician or the relevant medical team.

As he explains, before the treatment is administered, the patient’s overall condition, diagnosis, and severity of the disease are assessed, along with the expected benefits in relation to the potential risks.

He explains that during the procedure, the patient’s blood passes through a special machine, noting that during treatment, the plasma— that is, the liquid component of the blood, which in certain conditions may contain abnormal antibodies, immune complexes, or other harmful substances, and is replaced with appropriate replacement fluids, depending on the medical needs of each case. The blood cells, he adds, are returned to the body.

The Cyprus Nephrology Society warns, however, that the use of plasmapheresis without a clear medical indication is not scientifically substantiated and may expose the individual to unnecessary risks.

Among the possible complications, she notes, are blood pressure disorders, allergic reactions, bleeding, infections, as well as electrolyte and coagulation disorders.

“When administered for the correct indications and under the necessary safety conditions, it is a safe and effective treatment option,” states the Cyprus Nephrology Society, noting that in certain serious conditions, it can play a decisive role in improving the patient’s condition and may even prove life-saving.
