Meanwhile, speaking on the “Alpha News” program, the Commander of the Joint Rescue Coordination Center (KSED), Commander George Oikonomou, explained that they rushed immediately to the scene when they received information about the first boat, which was very close to the rocks, with the person on board jumping into the water and being rescued by the authorities.

At the same time, the second boat, which was nearby, attempted to sail away to avoid the rough waves and was in a precarious situation, according to Mr. Oikonomou, from which two people were rescued.

While the rescue operation was underway, the third boat belonging to the unfortunate Mavropoulos attempted to set sail.

“It was anchored, and as we saw, it didn’t make it.”

At that moment, the 77-year-old’s wife and daughter jumped into the sea and were rescued, while the unfortunate Mavropoulos was trapped in the wreckage and was recovered dead.

Mr. Oikonomou clarified that, to keep mariners informed, there is a radio station under the jurisdiction of the Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) that broadcasts weather bulletins at regular intervals, received from the Meteorological Service, and, if necessary, provides emergency updates in the event of deteriorating weather conditions.

At the same time, he noted that although there is no legal ban on departure, every speedboat operator or ship’s captain is required to take meteorological data into account, with a view to ensuring their own safety and that of their passengers.
