An unspeakable tragedy unfolded yesterday at KOT Beach in Larnaca, claiming the life of a 35-year-old mother from Romania who drowned, while her two minor daughters were also in danger of drowning.
The 35-year-old mother had gone to the beach with her family of five. The horrific incident occurred shortly after 6:00 p.m. when the mother and her two young daughters had gone for a swim. An eyewitness who was on the beach described the tragic events to Alpha.
EYEWITNESS: “It was
the mom, her two daughters, and a little boy. They went swimming; the boy—he’s 9 years old—managed to make it, though I’m not sure exactly where. The boy made it; he swam out, came up on the beach, and was shouting, ‘Help! Help!’ They drowned—I don’t know—and they went back in and brought them out.”
Unfortunately, the tragedy occurred half an hour after the lifeguard had finished his shift, resulting in quite a few people rushing to pull the mother and the two girls out of the water.
EYEWITNESS: “None
of them were conscious; all three had drowned. Neither the mother nor the babies were conscious…”
According to information from Alpha, members of an ambulance crew happened to be on the beach. They immediately began CPR on both the mother and the two girls. A doctor from the British bases was also at the scene and attempted to save the mother and children, but unfortunately, the 35-year-old mother could not be saved.
The two girls, aged 12 and 14, were initially taken to Larnaca General Hospital; however, due to the severity of their condition, they were transferred to Makarios Hospital. According to the police, the 12-year-old is on a ventilator in the Intensive Care Unit, while the 14-year-old’s condition is considered serious but stable.
