“Red button” that would immediately alert the police in the event of an attack on delivery drivers was proposed to the companies that operate delivery platforms by the Minister of Justice and Public Order, Kostas Fytiris, to companies operating delivery platforms.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a meeting on Thursday with staff from the Ministry, the Police, the Prison Service, and the Fire Department—and when asked about the attacks on delivery workers—the Minister said that following his meeting with the companies that operate the delivery platforms, “we found that there are also independent delivery workers who carry a significant amount of cash on them, and in most cases I believe the incidents are robberies rather than racially motivated.”
Noting that there cannot be a police officer everywhere, he referred to recommendations the Ministry made to the companies, mentioning a “red button.” “It will take some time to implement, provided the companies agree, so that the delivery person can press this button and the police can respond in the shortest possible time. The police must act as quickly as possible, provided that the victims also report the incident promptly,” he said.
When asked whether drug trafficking might be behind the attacks, he said that this is under investigation, noting that there have been so many arrests recently that “we don’t know where to put the detainees.”
“Arrests have been made, networks have been dismantled, and new ones are forming—whether individual or organized—but our job is to keep pursuing them. And to strike at the root of the problem,” he said.
When asked if there is evidence of dealers’ involvement in these networks, he said that there are dealers who may become accomplices, serving as the “hands” of a network. “Our role is to track them down, from the ‘hands’ all the way to the ‘head,’” said the minister.
