Electricity demand is being fully met, and has been on a downward trend in recent days, Haris Zavallis, Assistant Director of the National Energy Control Center of the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (CTSO), told CNA.
“Demand is falling, and starting tomorrow it will begin to fall even further. Temperatures will be around 39 degrees. We’ll be hovering around 1,200 megawatts (MW) at noon, a level of demand that poses no problem because we also have a lot of solar power,” he said initially.

“I estimate that in the afternoon we’ll be slightly below 1,000 megawatts (MW)—somewhere between 950 and 1,000,” he added.
Referring to the system’s capacity, Mr. Zavallis noted that there is no problem with conventional generation, which has a capacity of 1,251 MW.
“So demand is fully met both day and night, and we also have reserves in the system to cover any outages,” he noted.
As he reported, this year’s peak demand was recorded on July 23. At 2:45 p.m., it reached 1,372 MW, while at 8:00 p.m., it stood at 1,099 MW.
Mr. Zavallis estimated that it is very unlikely that demand will exceed that of July 23 for the remainder of the summer.
Finally, when asked what the Cyprus-Greece power interconnection would mean in practice, should the project be implemented, Mr. Zavallis replied that “we will be able to draw electricity from the cable when needed and, at the same time, we will be able to supply it.”
As he explained, the purchase and sale of electricity through the interconnection will be determined based on the bids submitted.
If the project is implemented, “there will be a special department within the CEM that will manage the interconnection, and suppliers will submit bids to buy and sell electricity,” he noted in conclusion.
