The number of asylum seekers receiving housing and food allowances in Cyprus has fallen to 2,000 and includes, among others, nationals of Syria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia, and Iraq.
Sources at the Deputy Ministry of Migration told CNA that approximately 400 of them are Syrians, and that the Deputy Minister has ordered a rapid review of their applications, as “since December 2024, the government in Syria has changed, the situation appears to be stabilizing, and therefore the reasons that previously justified granting international protection status no longer apply today.”
In total, there are approximately 13,600 pending asylum applications, of which 9,600 involve Syrian nationals. As the same sources point out, “over the past three years, benefit amounts have been reduced by 50%.”
Sources at the Deputy Ministry note that “the strict immigration policy of Nikos Christodoulides’ government has succeeded in drastically reducing illegal migration flows and, at the same time, significantly lowering the cost of immigration.”
