The Organization of Professional Potato Growers decided on Tuesday evening, at a public rally in Liopetri, to demand immediate solutions to the mounting problems facing the primary sector by organizing a protest event together with agricultural organizations.
The rally focused on water shortages, rising production costs, compensation for lost income, and the allocation of water for the second half of 2026.
In a statement to KYPE, Andreas Karyos, President of the Potato Producers’ Organizing Committee, stated that at the meeting, which was also attended by agricultural organizations, it was decided to organize “a dynamic event to be coordinated with the agricultural organizations for all sectors.”
At the same time, he clarified that the scale and format of the protest event will be decided following consultations between the organizers and various ministries, the Forestry Department, and the Minister of Agriculture, who, as he noted, has scheduled a meeting with them.
In conclusion, Mr. Karyos expressed his hope that “the response to resolving these issues will be positive so that we can preserve the primary sector in our country.”
