Lightning, Fires, and Rescues: Fire Department on High Alert Due to Severe Weather; 382 Incidents in 24 Hours

The Fire Department responded to 382 incidents in the last 24 hours, as the severe weather that hit Cyprus caused a series of problems and dangerous incidents in various areas.

According to Fire Department Spokesperson Andreas Kettis, of the total number of incidents, 21 involved fires, 359 were for special services, and two were false alarms.

Fire at a property in Avgorou following a lightning strike

At 9:52 a.m., the Fire Department responded to a fire that broke out in two metal sheds, which were adjacent to a ground-floor private residence in the community of Avgorou, in the Famagusta district.

The sheds contained various tools, machinery, and vehicle batteries. Three fire trucks responded to the scene, and the cause of the fire is reported to be a lightning strike.

Battle with the flames in Kokkinotrimithia

At 11:22 a.m., six fire trucks rushed to a fire that broke out in an outdoor area of a factory compound in Kokkinotrimithia, where old vehicles, old household electrical equipment, and construction materials.

Firefighters managed to prevent the fire from spreading both to the premises themselves and to adjacent properties and private vehicles, which were in immediate danger.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the possibility that it was caused by a lightning strike has not been ruled out.

An auxiliary residence was destroyed in Pera Oreini

At 1:27 p.m., a fire broke out in an auxiliary residence in the community of Pera Oreini, which was adjacent to the garage of the main residence.

The fire destroyed the contents of the outbuilding, including household items, clothing, and kitchenware. To extinguish the fire, the roof had to be dismantled.

Two fire trucks responded to the scene. The cause is under investigation, and it cannot be ruled out that the fire was caused by a short circuit in a freezer.

Assistance with a fire in the Androliko area

At 4:50 p.m., the Fire Department responded to assist the Forestry Department with a fire that broke out in dry grass and wild vegetation near the community of Androlikos, in the Paphos district.

The fire was within the Forestry Department’s area of responsibility, with the Fire Department assisting in the operation with one fire truck.

Rescue Operation at Cape Greco

Another notable mobilization occurred at 4:54 p.m., when the Fire Department received a call from the Search and Rescue Coordination Center (KSED) requesting assistance with a search in the waters off Agioi Anargyroi at Cape Greco.

According to the report, a person was reported missing following rough seas and was believed to have taken refuge on the rocks for protection.

The individual was located by a helicopter dispatched by the National Emergency Management Agency (KSED) and, after being rescued by emergency responders, he was transported to the Accident and Emergency Department of Famagusta General Hospital.

The Fire Department was present at the scene, and the Special Rescue Unit (EMAK) also responded to the incident.

Extrication Following a Car Accident in Alassa

Shortly thereafter, at 5:55 p.m., the Fire Department was called to respond to a traffic collision on the Limassol–Platra Road, near Alassa, where two private vehicles collided head-on.

One person was extricated from one of the vehicles using rescue equipment and handed over to the ambulance crew for transport to the Emergency Department at Limassol Hospital.

A rescue team and vehicle, as well as a fire truck, responded to the scene.

Fires in vehicles and a residence

At 8:35 p.m., a fire broke out in a private vehicle parked in a supermarket parking lot in Lakatamia. The fire caused damage to the vehicle’s back seat; according to the Fire Department, the cause was an electrical problem with the battery.

Shortly before midnight, at 11:32 p.m., the Fire Department responded to a small fire involving discarded materials in the kitchen of a residence in the Archangel Michael refugee settlement in Lakatamia.

The fire caused minor damage to the kitchen area, and the probable cause is reported to be discarded materials coming into contact with the stove.

The Fire Department also published its weekly activity report, with detailed data on all incidents and their respective categories.
