The Pan-Cyprian Veterinary Association has denounced the ongoing, illegal distribution and sale of veterinary pharmaceutical products by unauthorized individuals and businesses, citing “prolonged inaction on the part of the competent authorities” despite repeated complaints on the matter.
Speaking on the Alpha News program, the President of the Pan-Cyprian Veterinary Association, Dimitris Epameinondas, explained that this is a phenomenon that has been observed for at least ten years and is currently on the rise, as “illegal practices are now being widely used.” These are primarily antiparasitic drugs, which require a prescription and proper guidance from a licensed veterinarian.
The sale or distribution of veterinary medicines by unlicensed individuals constitutes a violation of the law and may be a criminal offense. These products are sold illegally through online platforms, pet supply stores, pet grooming salons, and other unauthorized points of sale, often without a veterinary prescription or supervision. The uncontrolled use of veterinary drugs can lead to serious risks to animal health, such as incorrect dosing, severe side effects, the development of antibiotic resistance, and delays in proper treatment.
The Cyprus Veterinary Association calls on the competent authorities to immediately enforce the law and carry out the necessary inspections and prosecutions, in order to put an end to an illegal practice that endangers animal welfare and public health.
