The alert at Larnaca Airport has been lifted following a bomb threat on Friday involving a flight that was scheduled to depart for Rome.
According to CNA, the security procedures that had been activated have been completed, and passengers are expected to begin boarding the aircraft again so that it can depart for its destination.
This followed a threatening fax message claiming there was a bomb in the aircraft’s luggage.
In statements to KYPE, the Minister of Transport, Communications, and Public Works, Evi Tsolaki, clarified that the threatening message regarding the presence of a bomb was received via fax “not only to the Civil Aviation Department, but also to other government agencies and the police,” noting that the message was identical for all recipients. He also reported that the crisis plan had been activated, with the Crisis Management Committee handling the situation at the airport.
The aircraft was grounded, the approximately 190 passengers were disembarked, and extensive checks were carried out.
According to the police, the report of a threat made it necessary to ground the aircraft in question for investigation. Based on preliminary information from the police, the information was assessed and investigated, all established protocols were activated, and the relevant authorities took the necessary actions.
The alert has now been lifted, and boarding is expected to resume.
