The Cyprus Police, in a statement, expressed its deep sorrow over the tragic incident that occurred yesterday, in which a woman was critically wounded by a gunshot and her police officer husband subsequently took his own life.
“Our thoughts are with the woman who is fighting for her life and with her family, who are going through these extremely difficult times. The case is under a full and thorough criminal investigation. Therefore, any public statement regarding the facts of the case or the circumstances under which this crime was committed would be premature and could potentially interfere with the investigation. For this reason, the Police will not make any further comments until the investigative proceedings are completed,” the statement notes.
“It is important to clarify that the Police do not leave issues concerning the mental health and well-being of its members to chance,” the Force notes, in reference to “certain public statements made today.”
“The Police Force has an institutionalized Human Resources Support Division, staffed by licensed psychologists, which provides psychological support, implements prevention and training programs, and, where the conditions set forth in the current institutional framework are met, the prescribed procedures are activated to protect both the members themselves and third parties,” he emphasizes.
The investigation into this specific incident “is ongoing, and only through it will all the facts be established. Until it is completed, any conclusion would be premature. The Cyprus Police will continue to act with transparency, accountability, and absolute respect for the investigation of this case, always guided by the protection of society and the support of its people,” the statement concludes.
