Sotiris Kyriakou, Community Leader of Agrokiopia, accuses the relevant state officials and government officials of “big lies,” regarding the construction and operation of a closed-type asphalt plant in the Mitsero area. This is because, according to him, the weather conditions prevailing in Cyprus do not allow for such a facility, and therefore the promises regarding a “perfect plant” do not correspond to reality.
Speaking on the “Alpha News” program, Mr. Kyriakou noted that a closed-type plant requires ambient temperatures ranging from 10 to 15 degrees Celsius, meaning that the plant that will operate in this already heavily burdened area will be an open-air facility and will emit carcinogenic and polluting substances.
“It is now clear to us that the health of our residents takes precedence, and we have taken the lies to the courtrooms—the claims that the public interest is being compromised and that this will come at a high cost— and these are lies as well.”
The Community Leader of Agrokipia emphasized that the government has not conducted the necessary studies and rejects the possibility of mobile units, a solution that was chosen for the construction of the Astromeritis-Evrychou highway, citing high costs as an excuse.
“This isn’t our problem; it’s because of Trump, so let them work it out with Trump.”
The case regarding the asphalt plant in Mitsero is pending before the Supreme Court, which is reviewing an appeal by local residents whose request to overturn the decision was rejected by the Administrative Court.
“There are six quarries in the area, and a permit has been requested for a seventh. There are slaughterhouses—the ones that supply the meat you all eat—that are affected. There’s the cattle; two-thirds of Cyprus’s cattle are here.”
Residents are requesting a meeting with the President of the Republic.
