The final decision on the implementation of the project for the new correctional facility in the Agios Sozomenos area will be made once the Master Plan and the necessary technical, environmental, and other studies have been completed and all the data has been comprehensively evaluated, the Ministry of Justice and Public Order announced, following a meeting held on Tuesday with the participation of the mayors and deputy mayors of the affected local authorities in the municipalities of South Nicosia–Idali and Latsia–Gerios.
According to the Ministry’s announcement, a substantive exchange of views took place during the meeting, the positions and legitimate concerns of the local authorities were documented, and it was agreed to continue the dialogue throughout all subsequent stages of the planning process.
As noted, as part of the process, a state-owned plot in the Agios Sozomenos area has been selected in order to assess its suitability and proceed with the preparation of the relevant Master Plan and the required studies.
According to the Ministry, the selection of the plot is a stage in the planning process. “The final decision on the project’s implementation will be made once the Master Plan and the necessary technical, environmental, and other studies have been completed and all data has been comprehensively evaluated,” it is emphasized, while it is added that upon completion of the Master Plan, it will be presented to local authorities, followed by a consultation process so that their views and substantiated recommendations can be taken into account before the design is finalized.
Provided that the studies confirm the suitability of the site and the feasibility of the project, the Ministry notes that its promotion will be combined with the consideration and, to the extent possible, the fulfillment of fair and substantiated requests from local authorities, particularly regarding infrastructure, the environment, and the broader revitalization of the region.
“Our shared goal is to continue a sincere and productive dialogue, based on mutual respect and responsibility, so that the final decision serves the needs of the State while also taking seriously into account the needs and legitimate concerns of local communities,” notes the Ministry of Justice and Public Order.
