Five Mile. A bloodstained beach that evokes war, destruction, and crimes.
It will now be under the control of the Turkish Cypriot forces of the Turkish occupation army, according to the Vakif Administration.
“This is a historically and spiritually significant area that holds a unique place in the collective memory of our nation, preserving the sacred memory of our martyrs, as it was the first landing point of the Peace Operation in Cyprus on July 20, 1974.” EVKAF
The Agreement
According to Turkish Cypriot media reports, the negotiations lasted several months, with the agreement signed in recent days to grant the use of the site for 30 years.
It is also reported that decision-making authority regarding the lease, use, and other provisions concerning the property in question—that is, the beach—lies with the waqf administration.
Simply put, ownership will not change; the property will simply be leased, with the primary goal of creating a museum to honor the landing—that is, the invasion.
“This area should be preserved as a place of remembrance that conveys the sacrifice of our martyrs and the struggle for the existence of the Turkish Cypriots.” EBKAF
All of this came just 18 days before the tragic events of the Turkish landing and what followed.
