Kyrenia Shipwreck: The catamaran’s watertight doors were open before the trip; repairs to previous damage were inadequate

The father of 3-year-old Annie, a victim of the accident, was a tragic figure outside the “court”

The Kyrenia “district court” decided to extend the detention of the nine suspects in the August 30 shipwreck for another seven days, while, once again, outside the courthouse, relatives of the victims and the missing chanted slogans against them, demanding justice.

As reported in the occupied territories, during today’s proceedings, the “police” stated that the ship’s VDR (black box), which was located on September 25, was sent to Turkey for forensic analysis, while the recordings have been transcribed onto a USB drive and are in the possession of the “authorities” of the pseudo-state, who will identify the voices based on voice samples from the suspects.

The Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Mechanical Engineers examined the wreckage that washed ashore and prepared a report, stating that previous repairs to the damage were deemed inadequate.

The “police” also reported that the ship’s watertight doors were found open before the voyage, even though they were supposed to be closed.  The “police” are still investigating the warnings the second engineer issued to the chief engineer regarding previous damage and repairs to the ship.

As reported by Turkish Cypriot media, the defense attorney argued that the “coast guard” did not carry out any rescue operation for the passengers and bears responsibility as well, since the “coast guard” vessel did not have the necessary thermal imaging systems to locate people sinking in the sea, and equipment such as life jackets, ropes, and lifeboats was also missing. No one from the “Coast Guard,” he added, boarded the sinking ship.

He also noted that only one person was rescued using a rope thrown from a helicopter, arguing that the delayed arrival of rescue teams was also a significant factor in the loss of life.

A tragic figure outside the “courtroom” was the father of the youngest victim of the maritime tragedy, 3-year-old Anni Asel.

Salim Hilaloglu was on the ship on August 30 with his 5-year-old son, Miran Asaf, his 3-year-old daughter, Anni Asel, and his 35-year-old wife, Nurcan Hilaloglu, who drowned and was found on the first day.

His 5-year-old son was seriously injured and is continuing his recovery in Turkey.

Mr. Hilaloglu survived the tragedy with injuries, and his three-year-old daughter remains missing. Supported by other men and crying, he shouted at the suspects, “Bring me my daughter!”
