New information has come to light regarding the serious allegation made by the Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Refugees against a civil servant who registered Turkish Cypriot agricultural land in the name his son, who works as a doctor in Germany.

The Turkish Cypriot Property Administration has stepped forward, presenting evidence and facts that shed new light on the case.

The story dates back 30 years. According to the Agency, the doctor’s father, who was not a civil servant at the time, received these specific plots of land for farming, as he met the criteria as a displaced agronomist. His son, who works in Germany, applied for and received a subsidy from KOAP in 2024—not for these specific plots, but for other, adjacent plots, which he may farm until 2028, following approval received from the Turkish Cypriot Properties Administration. His father’s wife also comes into the picture, as she holds title to other plots in the same area.

“There is nothing in our legislation that prohibits any civil servant from acquiring property. However, whatever the case may be, we recognize the conflict of interest involving public officials. We have begun the process of inspecting agricultural crops, but we have not yet completed everything.”
Elena Karekla – Senior Officer, Turkish Cypriot Property Management Service

The incident is already being investigated by the Service, which emphasizes that there is zero tolerance for circumvention of procedures and lack of transparency in land concessions.

Meanwhile, Nikos Kettiros has come forward with new allegations.

“Yesterday, we received yet another tip. It concerns a family business owned by this individual that is connected to the farmers. And the farmers are complaining that if they do not cooperate with this business, which is under his control, they will face penalties.”
Nikos Kettiros – AKEL Member of Parliament / Chair of the Refugee Committee

The Chair of the Refugee Committee forwarded all the information at his disposal to both the relevant agency and the Ministry of Agriculture for investigation.
