The new Green Point in the Larnaca District—the eighth in the district’s network—was inaugurated today in the Makenzi area, with the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment, Christos Senekis, stating that the nationwide Green Point Network will comprise 53 facilities upon completion of its expansion by 2028.
As the Minister noted in his speech at the opening ceremony, the new facility is expected to serve approximately 52,000 residents of the Larnaca Municipal District and 6,700 residents of the Dromolaxia-Meneou Municipal District.
According to data from the Larnaca Environmental Protection Agency, in 2025, visits to the district’s Green Points increased by 20% compared to 2024.
Mr. Senekis noted that the construction of the new Green Point was part of Phase A of the project “Expansion and Improvement of the Green Points Network,” which was implemented by the Water Development Department and funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan, with a total budget of 10 million euros.
As part of the same phase, four new Green Points were constructed, and the existing Alambra Green Point was expanded.
At the same time, construction is underway on two more Green Points in the districts of Nicosia and Famagusta, while plans are being finalized for six more—four in Nicosia and two in Limassol. Completion of the new infrastructure is scheduled to take place in phases through 2028.
Upon completion of this phase, the pan-Cypriot network will consist of 36 Large Green Points.
The Minister also announced that plans are underway to create 17 Small Green Points, with a total construction and equipment cost of 1.8 million euros and a target completion date by the end of 2027.
At the same time, a network of 50 Green Kiosks is being established, nine of which have already been installed in the Larnaca district. The total installation cost amounted to 4 million euros.
Mr. Senekis also noted that, as part of the LIFE IP CYzero Waste project, the creation of a network of Reuse Stores at existing and new Green Points, as well as two Repair and Reuse Centers.
Upon completion of the 36 large and 17 small Green Points, the network will comprise a total of 53 facilities.
Finally, the Minister also addressed the issue of illegal dumping sites, noting that through the #WasteFreeCyprus, a total of 2.22 million euros was allocated in 2024 and 2025 to 145 local authorities for cleanup efforts at 447 sites across Cyprus.
The Larnaca Environmental Organization (EOA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment, according to the Organization’s President, Angelos Hatzicharalambous.
Mr. Hatzicharalambous noted that the new Green Point was rebuilt on the existing site in accordance with modern standards, creating a safe and functional space for waste management.
He noted that this is the eighth licensed Green Point operating in the Larnaca district.
As he mentioned, the project was part of the initiative “Improvement and Expansion of the National Network of Green Points and Creation of Collection Points and Recycling Corners” under the Recovery and Resilience Plan. It was implemented by the Water Development Department and fully funded by the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility, with a total of 952 thousand euros.
Mr. Hatzicharalambous stated that the primary objective is to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills, curbing illegal dumping, and promoting recycling and reuse.
He also emphasized that the Larnaca Environmental Agency’s goal is to create a comprehensive and modern network that will effectively serve the city and the entire district.
Mr. Hatzicharalambous called on citizens to use the Green Points and avoid littering, emphasizing that the success of this effort also depends on the daily choices citizens make.
In his speech, the Mayor of Larnaca highlighted the importance of Larnaca’s new permanent Green Point for the city, as a modern and well-organized waste management infrastructure, was highlighted in his own speech by Larnaca Mayor Andreas Vyras.
Mr. Vyras noted that the project marks the transition “from temporary to permanent” and “from a stopgap solution to a modern, organized, and comprehensive infrastructure.”
As he noted, the new Green Point is designed to meet the city’s current needs and the requirements of a modern European waste management policy.
The Mayor of Larnaca emphasized that the facility will contribute to responsible waste management, promote reuse and recycling, and help curb uncontrolled waste disposal.
At the same time, he emphasized that protecting the environment is a collective responsibility and that, beyond the creation of infrastructure, citizen participation is also required.
Addressing the residents, Mr. Vyras urged them to make proper use of the Green Point and to make responsible waste management a part of their daily lives.
The mayor described the project as another step toward a clean, modern, and environmentally friendly Larnaca and thanked the Larnaca Environmental Agency and the Ministry of Agriculture for their support and cooperation in the implementation and operation of the infrastructure.
