The details emerging about the tragedy at Cape Greco, where businessman Dimis Mavropoulos met a horrific death, are shocking.
His devastated daughter described to authorities the nightmare she endured while trying to save herself from the raging waves, as well as her father’s final dramatic moments.
According to her statement, the unfortunate businessman told them to jump into the sea to save themselves, while he remained on the boat, steering it toward deeper waters in an attempt to avoid crashing into the rocks. The storm, however, was relentless.
COMMANDER GEORGE OIKONOMOU, Hellenic Navy—Commander of the Special Rescue Unit: “It was
anchored; it tried to set sail but couldn’t make it. At that moment, the two women jumped into the water; the helicopter was already there and proceeded with the rescue. The unfortunate man, sadly, was trapped in the wreckage.”
His partner is also expected to give a statement within the next few hours, while it has not yet been determined why the 77-year-old did not call for help via radio in a timely manner.
CYPRUS POLICE: “The
investigation is in full swing. On-site examinations have been conducted, and statements are being taken.”
Meanwhile, new video footage captures, frame by frame, the rescue of one of the people aboard the other boats that were in danger. As seen in the video, the man falls into the sea, is rescued by police officers, and is helped ashore.
Following a meeting at the Deputy Ministry of Maritime Affairs, the relevant authorities issued a NAVTEX to mariners, warning of the dangers in the Cape Greco area.
DEPUTY MINISTRY OF MARITIME AFFAIRS
“The Deputy Ministry of Maritime Affairs, in cooperation with other relevant authorities of the Republic, is taking steps to ensure the immediate removal of all polluting substances and the two shipwrecks from the sea. A relevant NAVTEX has been issued by the Search and Rescue Coordination Center.”
The relevant directive will remain in effect until the removal of the wreckage from the sea is completed.
