Nikolas Kyriakidis: Disagreements Are the Lifeblood of Democracy

An Apology from the Executive Chairman of the Cyprus Forum
ALPHANEWSLIVE

“Disagreements are the lifeblood of democracy. A country where everyone agrees is not a democracy—it is silence,” was the message sent by the Executive President of the Cyprus Forum, Nicholas Kyriakides, as he welcomed the conference participants.

Mr. Kyriakides expressed his belief in a political process characterized by transparency and participation, arguing that it is the only path that stands the test of time.

Referring to the withdrawals from this year’s Forum, Mr. Kyriakides said it was a sensitive issue. “We did not consult in advance with everyone we should have, and this had consequences,” he said. “People whom we deeply respect decided not to be here today,” he noted, adding that they respect their decision and harbor no hard feelings.

At the same time, he apologized “to all those who believe in peace,” adding that “we have heard you, we understand you, and we will continue to work to correct this mistake.”

At the same time, he noted that the Conference brought to the table issues that were not being discussed publicly, whether regarding the Cyprus problem or other matters.

“We brought them to the table because it was necessary, and we will continue to do so, because we believe that institutions are strong when they are based on principles, not emotions.”

The future of the country will be shaped by those who persist in engaging in dialogue, said Mr. Kyriakides.
