"
If any negligence or error on his part is found, he will not hesitate to face justice for the Filo Jet shipwreck," Erhan Arikli, the former “minister of transportation” who was removed from his post following the incident, after coming under fire from relatives of the dead and missing.
As reported in the occupied territories, while the “court” in occupied Kyrenia issued a new 7-day detention order for the 9 suspects in the shipwreck, who faced intense criticism and verbal attacks from relatives gathered outside the building, Mr. Arikli posted a statement saying that the incident must be fully investigated and that all those responsible must be held accountable before the law. Relatives were shouting at him again today outside the “court.”
He also expressed his sorrow and shared the relatives’ “common hope” for justice, noting that he had previously met with the families and heard firsthand their grief, reactions, and expectations firsthand.
He referred to his speech in “parliament” during an emergency session discussing the shipwreck of August 30, where he had presented documents and information regarding the issues concerning him.
He added that he would fulfill his responsibilities regarding any matter required by the competent authorities during the investigation and judicial proceedings, noting that his approach to the shipwreck was no different from his response to other major tragedies in the past.
He also wrote that on the day after the accident, he requested that the Accident Investigation Team of the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure be dispatched to the area to investigate all angles.
The “judicial” process, he continued, concerns the suspects who are currently appearing before the “court” as part of the investigation, and he does not consider it appropriate to appear before the “court” at this sensitive stage, when the “judiciary” is independently carrying out its duties, so as to turn the proceedings into a political debate or further exacerbate the families’ grief.
He noted, however, that he would be present wherever necessary if summoned by the “court” or the investigating “authorities” and would fulfill all his responsibilities.
