Cypriot attorney Petros Papadopoulos aims to put Meta, the company that operates Facebook and Instagram, in the dock before the Limassol District Court, Cypriot attorney Petros Papadopoulos. He has already filed a lawsuit against the company, and the court documents are expected to be served at the tech giant’s headquarters in Ireland, a process governed by European legislation that requires the document to be translated and a corresponding request to be submitted to the Ministry of Justice.

He explained the reasons for this unprecedented case himself on the “Alpha News” program; they concern the ban on political and election advertisements by the two platforms in the European Union, combined with the operation of algorithmic content-ranking systems, which affect the visibility and dissemination of political views.
“The basis of my lawsuit and my argument is Meta’s policy, which, as of the end of 2025, has banned the posting of political and social messages on its platforms. This affects me because my posts receive low engagement due to the algorithm, and compared to previous years, my posts have very limited reach.”
Mr. Papadopoulos said that in recent years he has been very active on social media with posts on political issues and intends to participate in future elections. He argues that the reduced organic reach of his content, combined with the lack of transparency in algorithmic mechanisms, substantially affects his ability to communicate political messages to the public.
“Because I have a strong need to express myself politically, and social media has become one of the main tools of political communication, I consider it very important to have a solid foundation—a sense of freedom—without too many restrictions.”
