The Municipality of Latsia-Gerios, requesting written assurance from the state that the relevant plans have been definitively withdrawn.
In a press release, the Municipality states that it received a letter from the government dated July 30, 2026, requesting that it lift its previous reservations regarding the issue of establishing “shelters for children and adolescents.” The City Council, as it notes, reiterates its position that it will not accept the promotion of plans by the central government which, as it states, have been rejected by both the Council itself and the residents.
In its response letter to the Ministry of the Interior, the Municipality recalls that as early as 2023, the then Municipal Councils of Latsia and Geri had expressed their opposition to the possibility of transferring state-owned land to the Social Welfare Services for the creation of these specific facilities. At the same time, it refers to the reactions sparked in the area, the protests, and the collection of over 8,000 signatures, which, as noted, were delivered to the Presidential Palace following a protest rally in November 2023.
The Municipality further states that it had repeatedly requested the withdrawal of the plans, citing a meeting with the Deputy Minister of Migration in September 2024, during which, it claims, assurances were given that there were no plans to establish facilities within the municipal boundaries. At the same time, it notes that it reiterated its objection following further communication from the Social Welfare Services in November 2024.
In its letter, the Municipality requests from the state “written assurance” of the definitive withdrawal of the plans and states that it reserves the right to take any legal measures to safeguard, as it puts it, peace and prosperity in the region. At the same time, it maintains that it will not allow any plans to be implemented without the consent of the local authority and the residents.
Finally, the Municipality of Latsia-Geri states that it will continue to advocate for development and infrastructure projects for the region, noting that “it will not become a dumping ground” for government projects that, as it argues, are not accepted by other local authorities.
