Five days after the tragic death of 77-year-old businessman Dimos Mavropoulos at Cape Greco, authorities are pushing for measures to address safety gaps at sea.

The tragic accident has led the government to tighten regulations. Yesterday, the Cabinet approved an amendment to the law prohibiting vessels from setting sail in adverse weather conditions.

“We will do everything in our power to ensure that we never again mourn any victims and to further strengthen the state so that we can prevent such situations from occurring.”
Marina Hatzimanoli – Deputy Minister of Shipping

The goal is for the new regulations to also cover private vessels in cases where departure is prohibited, until the Coast Guard is established.

“The goal is to have a service stretching from the coastline to the EEZ that will monitor, inspect, enforce the laws, and coordinate activities. This is a decision that will solve many problems within the Republic.”
Kostas Fytiris – Minister of Justice

The recovery of debris from the shipwrecks continues. The wreckage is expected to provide answers regarding the technical condition of the vessels, the points of impact, and evidence that could not be examined while they were on the seabed.

Two investigations are currently underway. One is being conducted by the Deputy Ministry of Shipping and the Police regarding the circumstances of the 77-year-old’s death, and the second by the Commission for the Investigation of Maritime Accidents and Incidents regarding the sinking of the first vessel.

The funeral of the unfortunate businessman was held this morning at the Church of Saint Kosmas in Limassol.
