The Pan-Cyprian Mastocytosis Association (PASYMAS) is participating this year as Cyprus’s representative on the International Committee on Mastocytosis and Mast Cell Disorders, in the joint global information and awareness campaign taking place on the occasion of the International Mastocytosis & Mast Cell Disorders on October 20.
The International Committee is a global network of nonprofit patient organizations, support organizations, and partner organizations active in the field of mastocytosis and mast cell disorders.
The initiative was launched in 2018, through the collaboration of 24 patient organizations, with the shared goal of giving a stronger voice to people living with these rare conditions and their families, to raise awareness among the public and healthcare professionals, and to promote research, better diagnosis, and access to appropriate treatments and care.
Today, this international effort has expanded significantly, and 28 organizations from around the world are uniting their voices for the first time in a common, coordinated international campaign, with Cyprus participating through PASYMAS.
For the first time on this scale, organizations from different countries are simultaneously conveying a common message through informational materials, social media, posters, videos, personal patient testimonials, and awareness-raising activities.
“Invisible” Conditions with a Real Impact
Mast cell disorders can affect each patient differently, and in many cases, the symptoms are not apparent to those around them.
Mastocytosis is a rare condition associated with the abnormal accumulation and activation of mast cells and can occur in both children and adults.
Depending on the patient and the form of the condition, different body systems may be affected, leading to symptoms involving the skin, the gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, and other systems; in some patients, there is also a risk of severe reactions, such as anaphylaxis.
The complexity and overlap of symptoms with other conditions can also lead to a delay in diagnosis.
For this reason, international efforts are focused on raising awareness, recognizing symptoms, timely and accurate diagnosis, scientific research, and the creation of stronger support structures for patients and their families.
Cyprus: Part of a Global Voice
The participation of the Pan-Cyprian Mastocytosis Association in the International Committee represents an important step toward representing Cypriot patients on the international stage.
Through collaboration with patient organizations and institutions from around the world, PASYMAS seeks to exchange knowledge and experiences, develop international partnerships, and raise awareness about mastocytosis in Cyprus.
At the same time, as part of this year’s International Day, the Association will organize a series of informational and awareness-raising events in Cyprus, conveying the common international message and giving a voice to people who live with mastocytosis every day.
28 members.
28 countries.
One common voice.
One common goal: no patient should remain invisible.
October 20 is not just another date on the calendar.
It’s a day for patients to be heard.
A day for greater awareness.
A day for early diagnosis, better care, and more research.
A day to turn information into understanding and understanding into meaningful support.
Invisible struggles need visible support.
