The most important exams before returning to school

Going back to school is a great opportunity to look after our children’s health, so we can start the new school year with greater confidence. After a summer of a more relaxed pace, the school bell brings children back to a demanding daily schedule. School, homework, tutoring, sports, and other after-school activities require energy and good physical fitness. Given these facts, preventive lab testing can be a useful tool for gaining a better understanding of our child’s health.

A complete blood count is one of the basic tests that can be included in a child’s preventive checkup. It can provide important information about the state of their body and help, among other things, to detect anemia. The checkup can be supplemented with tests for iron, ferritin, vitamin B12, and folic acid. Especially in children who frequently experience fatigue or weakness, these specific tests can provide useful information to the pediatrician.

A child’s overall health is not limited to just their blood. Depending on the child’s age, medical history, and needs, a more comprehensive biochemical panel may be necessary. This may include blood sugar, TSH to check thyroid function, urea and creatinine, calcium, potassium, and sodium, as well as the transaminases AST/SGOT and ALT/SGPT. A comprehensive laboratory workup can provide the physician with a more complete picture of the patient’s health, helping to identify potential findings early on that require further investigation.

When it comes to preventive screening, we must not overlook lipids. Cholesterol and triglycerides can be tested, especially when there is a relevant indication, such as a family history, excess body weight, or another risk factor. Monitoring lipid levels from an early age can help with the early detection of elevated levels and, where necessary, with implementing appropriate lifestyle changes and follow-up care.

Vitamin D is another parameter that can be assessed when there is a relevant indication. Despite the intense sunshine in Cyprus, modern lifestyles, limited time spent outdoors, and other factors can affect vitamin D levels. A simple lab test can show whether vitamin D levels are within the desired range and help the doctor decide whether further treatment orand monitoring are needed.

When there is a specific medical indication, the doctor may recommend more specialized tests. Depending on the case, these may include an X-ray to assess bone age, an abdominal ultrasound, or a chest X-ray.

The most important thing for parents to keep in mind is that a comprehensive lab workup can provide them with a more complete picture of key aspects of their child’s health and highlight any needs that need to be investigated. The best way to prepare for the new school year starts with health: children who are healthy, strong, and ready to meet the demands of their daily lives.
