The discussion on the future of the Limassol Zoo provides an opportunity to redefine its role, based on modern principles of nature conservation, environmental education, and animal welfare, according to a statement from the Office of the Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare.

The announcement notes that the city center of Limassol has few large, contiguous green spaces and that the area where the zoo is located, in combination with the Public Garden to which it is adjacent, holds particular environmental, social, and cultural value.

As noted, the area is home to important plant species and serves as a place for recreation, culture, and environmental awareness for citizens.

The Commissioner’s Office states that upgrading the site is necessary, but without further sealing off the land with new buildings or extensive hard surfaces.

Regarding the zoo, it notes that its position is that it needs to be transformed into a modern facility, in line with the philosophy of European legislation on zoos, one that serves environmental education, the protection of biodiversity, and public awareness.

At the same time, it adds, high standards of animal welfare must be ensured for the animals housed there, with appropriate enclosures that meet their biological and behavioral needs.

In this context, the Commissioner’s Office states that consideration should be given to relocating species for which suitable conditions cannot be ensured or which cannot thrive under Cyprus’s climatic conditions.

At the same time, it notes that the zoo may continue to house species that can thrive under local conditions, provided that it ensures it has the appropriate infrastructure and meets the requirements of European legislation regarding a high standard of animal welfare.
