The Israeli Embassy in Cyprus presented the bilingual (Greek-English) edition “When Aphrodite Met King David,” a collection of stories that explores the historical, cultural, and human ties that have connected the peoples of Cyprus and Israel throughout the centuries.
According to a statement from the Embassy, the event marked both the official presentation of the print edition and its release in a new digital format, which now makes it accessible to a wider audience.
Speaking at the event, Israel’s Ambassador to Cyprus, Oren Anolik, emphasized the importance of highlighting and sharing the stories that have brought the two peoples closer together over the centuries.
“For thousands of years, the Mediterranean has served as a bridge between our peoples—a route for trade, cultural exchange, faith, and human contact. This publication reminds us that behind every historical bond there are people, and behind every relationship between countries there are countless human stories waiting to be discovered and heard,” he said.
“When people learn about each other’s stories, they can see beyond distances and beyond stereotypes. They discover shared experiences, shared values, and human connections,” he noted, according to the press release.
It is noted that the book “takes the reader on a journey through time, revealing unexpected connections between the two peoples” and “highlights relationships and interactions that span from archaeology and religious traditions to agriculture, architecture, art, sports, and human stories.”
Among other things, it presents the ancient connections between Cypriot pottery and the Land of Israel, the Jewish heritage of medieval Famagusta, architect Ginsburg’s contribution to modern Cyprus, the journey of Jaffa’s citrus fruits and Cypriot agricultural traditions, the legacy of Pertsiena, as well as the history of Jewish refugees who were held in camps in Cyprus. “These and many other stories shed light on centuries of contact, interaction, and exchange between the two peoples,” the report states.
